First Time at The 5th Floor restaurant - so a bit of an experiment even though we had held our 'birthday party' there earlier this year. The decorating went well and the place looked great. Everyone arrived well on time and the band were really impressed and thought it was a great venue. John the piper took part, providing additional Gaelic flair to the evening and it all went very well. The buffet wasn't the fantastic array of last year but it was enjoyed by everyone - the soup was especially delicious and once the dancing got on the way the evening passed in a flash. The floor was lovely to dance on despite being a little smaller than we recollected, but for the numbers it was quite adequate - Pictures from the night and other details can be found HERE .
Special commemorative coasters were given out to everyone and the table mats were again specially designed to include images of everyone who had been to the Tuesday class since last year. Once more at Kamares but with a brand table new layout to try to create more room for dancing and give the non-dancers a better view of the action. The food was a little late arriving but superb once it did and the new decorations looked great. It was also the first time we started the event with a Grand March - despite the limited space and having to take care on the stairs it was a great success and provided a fitting start for a brilliant night. The second year at Kamares Club. This time we knew a few more of the dances though it can't be said that we danced them any better- not that that detracted from the fun of trying! The weather was a lot warmer so they didn't light the fire which was a shame because somehow the atmosphere was slightly diminished but otherwise it was another excellent night This was our first year in Cyprus and the first year we attended a St Andrew's Ball in Paphos. It was also (as far as I am aware) the first year that the Society had held the ball at the Kamares Club in Tala. Prior to that it had been a much bigger affair at the Annabelle hotel. Despite the smaller venue we enjoyed it very much, and danced practically every dance even though many of the dances were unfamiliar. The Band were 2 brothers Graeme and Stephen Mackay who fly in every year to provide music for the ball, they were excellent musicians and the atmosphere, with a roaring log fire and an impressive buffet was both cozy and elegant; perfectly in keeping with the smart dresses and highland outfits and giving the evening an authentic Scottish feel. |
St Andrew -patron Saint of ScotlandSt Andrew's day is 30th November and it is now traditional to hold a Ball around this time in honor of the day. This is the event where we show off our Scottish Country Dancing and enjoy dancing to a live band Archives
